Features of the Patriot Power Generator

Solar Panels

Solar panels are an integral part of any solar generator. Each unit requires a certain number of solar panels to enable the device to take in as much of the sun’s rays as needed.  The average residential solar generator has a solar panel that produces about 300 watts per hour under direct sunlight.  This means that about ten hours of continuous sunlight during a typical summer day results in about 3000 watts or 3-kilo watts each day.  This, of course, varies drastically depending upon the sun’s rays absorbed by the solar panels during the day.

The Patriot Power Generator comes with a 100-watt solar panel, and the company claims that it can be fully charged within 7 hours.  But even under perfect conditions, according to many who have tested this theory, it rarely does that. So instead, this solar panel will likely get about seventy-five watts of energy per hour, which translates to about 9 to 10 hours of charge time.

Furthermore, realistically there are only about 6 hours a day with ideal recharging conditions for a solar panel to reach its full potential.  This is what leads to the low 75 watts per hour charge. Coupled with the 690 Wh battery, the Patriot Power Generator will only charge about sixty-five percent per day.

So, unfortunately, Patriot Power Generator’s 100-watt solar panel is not adequate to completely recharge the solar-powered generator within a day.

AC Power

Most solar power generators come with an alternate AC power charging option. This is useful during all those cloudy days when users are unable to charge using their solar panels. The Patriot Power Generator system allows people to charge their devices without the need for a sunny day.

Battery

Undeniably, the battery of a solar power generator is of utmost importance when dealing with an emergency system.  After all, the usefulness of a solar generator comes into effect during a situation requiring alternative sources of power. Furthermore, a great battery will provide the necessary electrical backup during any emergency where there is an outage of the main electrical grid.

Therefore, the durability, performance, type, and capacity of the battery in question are the parameters that place the best of the best in line with their pricing. Patriot Power Generator promises users 28 percent more battery storage with their latest Patriot Power Generator 1800 series compared to their previous Patriot Power Generator 1500 model.

But that percentage is not as significant as it may seem.  For example, the Patriot Power Generator 1500 model can hold a charge for a refrigerator for about 6 to 9 hours. The Patriot Power Generator 1800 model can do the same for about 4 to 7 hours, translating into not that much of a difference.

The average watt-hours of a fully recharged Patriot Power Generator are only 650wH. Nevertheless, it has a high-quality 12-volt lithium iron phosphate battery, but the capacity is still a downer.

Another cause for concern is that on July 28, 2016, the battery sold with the Patriot Power Generator was posing a fire hazard to users. Consequently, 4Patriots, the company that manufactures Patriot Power Generators, recalled the solar generators promptly. Even then, there were thirteen reports of generators getting caught on fire, two reports of smoke, and one of the strange smells emitting from the generator. On the bright side, 4Patriot sent replacement solar generators to everyone, and luckily there were no injuries reported.

Battery Size & Shelf Life

The proposed shelf life of the battery of a Patriot Power Generator is about six months to a year. This is indeed considered halfway decent.  It actually means that once you have fully charged your Patriot Power Generator, it will slowly start losing its power after the initial six-month period.  The Patriot Power Generator does have some high-quality aspects, and this is one of them.  The industry standard is less than six months.

Charging Rate & Lifecycle

Another top-notch aspect associated with 4Patriot’s power generator is its lifespan.  The company claims their unit’s solar panels and the battery can be discharged and charged continuously for up to 2,500 cycles.  This longevity has put this solar generator among the top ones in its class.

Charging Capability

Despite the drawbacks of the battery capacity, this solar panel generator does not fare too bad when it comes to the speed while charging itself.  This, of course, is another feature of this solar generator that inevitably adds value for its users.  The Patriot Power Generator also boasts of fast charging feature useful for charging cell phones and laptops.

Extent of Expansion

Today, lots of tech-related devices come with options for expansions, and this one is no different.  The sole purpose of this is to achieve a higher level of performance and output than the original statistics provided at the time of purchase.

In the world of solar generators, this would mean expanding items such as solar panels, among other key features. But, unfortunately, when it comes to Patriot Solar Generator, expansion is not their strong suit.

As previously stated, the battery capacity for a solar-powered generator such as the Patriot Power Generator 1800 is relatively small at only 690wH. Yet, there is no way to expand its battery capacity.

Customer Service

4Patriots, the company behind the Patriot Power Generator 1800 model, can be praised for having a customer service team who actually answer the phone.  Many companies do not even bother to provide their customers with this necessity.  Having said this, a brief look at the many complaints lodged against their customer service department concerning solar generators is unnerving.  Apparently, those on the other line are totally incompetent when it comes to knowing the details of their products, especially of their Patriot Power Generators and their Patriot Power Sidekick brand.

Power Outlets

One of the great things about having a solar generator is that when there is a power outage, one can be assured of charging their most important devices.  To this effect, the Patriot Power Generator 1800 model does not fare too well.  With only two 120 volt wall outlet plugs, it seems a bit minimal.  One may want to plug in a fridge, mobile, laptop, lights, etc.

The limited 2 outlets could be a turn-off for many hoping to buy a product that would be a lifesaver during emergencies.  Of course, one could purchase an extra item such as a power strip, but it seems to be a moot point when you order a product that you expect to be fully equipped for emergencies.

On the upside, the Patriot Power Generator 1800 model comes with 4 USB outlets and 1 DC cigarette lighter outlet.

Overview

There is much to say about this best-selling and industry-leading solar generator.   Some are good, and some are bad, but overall this device would deserve a slightly above average score.  In several aspects, the positive features that it has do outweigh the negative ones.  For example, this solar generator can power up your refrigerator, freezer, medical devices, etc.  It is also smoke or fume-free and has high quality and durable lithium-iron-phosphate battery renowned for its stability.

The Patriot Power Generator can also handle upwards of 3,048 watts at peak power usage and a continuous rate of about 1,800 watts (hence the namesake).  Having stated this, we do believe that in a worst-case scenario, this handy device will surely be an asset worth holding on to when you so desperately need an emergency backup power.

Despite its drawbacks, the Patriot Power Generator 1800 model still wins the race. As an old-fashioned American success story, 4Patriots, LLC is the epitome of a family-run business.  The company literally began at a kitchen table in Nashville, Tennessee.  The company wholeheartedly wants to create things that can really help regular people and give them real-life solutions to problems that might arise during emergencies.  To this effect, they offer a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee which protects your Patriot power generator by a no-questions-asked policy.  With this in mind, it is not difficult to see why many customers love and trust this company and its products.

FAQs

Where are the Patriot power generator products made?

4Patriots designs and develops their products at their corporate office in Tennessee, but they ship all their orders from their warehouse in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their customer support staff is also US-based.

How do I know if the generator will run a refrigerator of any capacity?

Most people do not realize that a refrigerator does not require it to be run continuously on a Patriot Power Generator. If the door is not being opened and closed several times, it will keep its own temperature. A great suggestion we like to give customers is to keep a fridge thermometer and notice when it falls to 40 degrees, then to plug the Patriot Power Generator back.

Can I charge this solar panel on cloudy days?

The Patriot 1800 has the ability to detect sunlight even on a cloudy day, but it will be at its peak performance with full sunlight bearing down on it. Therefore, as an added precaution, it is always a good idea to rotate the solar panels with the sun’s angle throughout the day.

Is there a warranty or guarantee system?

4Patriots does offer what they call: an ironclad guarantee.  With this guarantee, you get a 100% money-back satisfaction warrantee.  This is a no-questions-asked return policy that lasts for a full year.
