How Do Solar Spot Lights Work?

Not all of us are solar technology experts, and in fact, despite the increasingly widespread availability and applicability of solar power, for most people the inner workings of solar panels remain a mystery. If this is the case for you, we don’t blame you, they can seem pretty extraordinary things to the untrained eye. The truth is though, is that the construction of solar panels is pretty simple, and whilst an incredible amount of work has gone into the development of solar cell technology, this too is now pretty straightforward to explain.

Solar panels are comprised of solar (also known as photovoltaic) cells, which react both chemically and physically to the introduction of UV light, thus generating electricity. Imagine how a plant’s cells photosynthesise when exposed to sunlight, generating the energy the plant needs to stay alive: this is essentially how photovoltaic cells work, too. From there, it’s a pretty straightforward process of the solar panels sending electricity either directly into an appliance, or first into a battery pack for storage.

With solar spot lights, the solar panels are built directly into each individual unit. A small solar panel either lies flat atop the CCTV unit-shaped head of the spot light, or is affixed at and angle to the light. This solar panel spends the daylight hours taking the energy of sunlight and converting it into usable DC power. Volts of DC electricity are then passed into a battery pack contained within the body of the spot light. Then, come night (or whenever you’ve chosen to set your spotlights to work), the electricity stored in the battery pack is used to power the bulbs of the spotlight. It’s as simple as that!

Solar spot lights are mounted on stakes which can be planted straight into the ground without requiring any additional installation. They work straight out of the box.

Some solar spotlights must be positioned so that their panels face directly up toward the sky, limiting slightly their versatility, whilst others have angled solar panels allowing for them to be positioned in almost any direction you like. All should be, as standard, weatherproof so as to operate in all but the most extreme of weather conditions. Some will be motion-sensor equipped, others will work automatically, and some may come with remote controls.

Pros and Cons of Solar Spot Lights

As with all modern technology, there are both positives and negatives, advantages and disadvantages to outfitting your home, yard and/or business with solar spot lights. Let’s take a look at those pros and cons.

Pros:

  1. No bulky, ugly wiring, and easy installation. One of the most attractive features of any solar powered product (but especially of solar spot lights) is their distinct lack of wiring. Since the solar panels are built right into each unit, and each unit is thus ready to work straight out of the box, there’s no fussy wiring or bracket-mounting to deal with. Installation is as easy as planting the light in the ground and waiting for it to charge.
  2. Cost effective. Solar spot lights are not particularly expensive, on average costing you about $15-$20 a piece, after which they will light your home and garden for free for as long as they last (which should be a 2-3 years, at least). This means that once you’ve footed the bill for the initial purchase, you’ll not pay a dime more on electricity bills, and can enjoy free lighting for perhaps the first time in your life!
  3. Environmentally-friendly. Not only does a lack of bulky grid-powered wiring mean a prettier garden, it also means a happier planet. Instead of using fossil-fuel or nuclear-powered grid electricity to light your way, you can use the natural and infinite power of sunlight. Keep the planet healthy and your conscious clear!
  4. Automatic light sensitivity. Instead of having to manually turn each individual unit on at dusk and off at dawn, most solar spot lights are designed with this capability built in. Thus, they will automatically detect the change in light intensity and switch themselves on when night falls, switching themselves back on come morning.

Cons:

  1. No warranty. Unfortunately, due to the fairly inexpensive nature of these products, many of them come without a warranty (or come with one, but are more costly). Additionally, whilst environmentally friendly in the way they produce electricity, their life-expectancy is not as high as we might like (estimated at 2-3 years).
  2. Inflexibility. Whilst this is not something which affects those higher-priced units, some of the cheaper solar spot lights are fairly inflexible. This is because their solar panels are fixed permanently to the top of the unit, thus limiting the angle you can position your light at (since it needs to correspond to the angle at which it will maximise its exposure to sunlight). We recommend investing in a spot light with the panel attached separately.
  3. Light dependency. This should go without saying, but solar powered products require solar power (sunlight). Unless they receive sufficient exposure to sunlight on a daily basis, they will either not have enough stored electricity to shine throughout the night, or their brightness will appear dull and won’t be as effective.

Buyer’s Guide

Spotlights are designed and manufactured to serve different customer needs. Some are built for small outdoors while others light up large spaces. Similarly, some spotlights are built for single lighting purposes while others are for decoration and security. This buying guide will help you out in choosing the right product for your particular usage.

Design

Design is a critical aspect of any spotlight. Most lights support adjustable solar panels to improve their energy efficiency. Therefore, you must buy a solar light that offers the most efficient design for optimum performance.

Material

Plastic is the most commonly used material in the frames of solar lights. However, some products have aluminum bodies as well. Material is integral to the durability and usefulness of any solar light. You should be looking for a product that has either high-quality plastic such as ABS plastic or other heavy-duty material such as aluminum.

Brightness Modes

The performance of solar lights is defined by their LED beads and the performance of these LED beads is defined by their brightness and brightness modes. If a solar light is producing more lumens of brightness than its counterparts, you should choose it without any hesitation.

Installation

Installation is yet another feature that is highly valued by many users. Many brands offer solar lights that require DIY installations for saving their customers’ expenses. Also, multiple installation modes are offered with many solar lights, therefore, watch out for this feature.

Manual and Automatic

While most solar lights have the ability to operate automatically without the need for human intervention, some do require manual instructions to operate. If you want to save yourself from the effort of operating the solar lights, invest in automatic lights.

FAQs

Can the solar spotlights be used as security lights?

Spotlights are not primarily built to provide security for your house. This is because the security lights have highly sensitive motion sensors that detect the movement of any object within their range. Most solar lights on our list do not have these motion sensors

Can a solar spotlight be used inside a house?

You cannot use a solar spotlight inside your house because it is designed and built to perform outdoors. It uses a solar panel and a battery to charge up and perform. It has an automatic turn-on/off feature that works with the sunlight. Also, a few solar lights have motion sensors that detect the movement of objects and light up to alert the house owners. This obviously is not a feature for indoors. All of these specialties indicate that it is not feasible to use a solar spotlight inside a house.

Can the water-resistant solar spotlights be used inside swimming pools?

All solar spotlights are built with durable materials so that these lights can endure extreme weather conditions. Many lights have IP64-67 ratings that allow them to resist rains and humid temperatures. However, water resistance doesn’t mean that you can permanently install them inside a swimming pool. This is because the pressure of water is much higher inside a pool which can damage these lights.

Can I change the place of installation of the spotlights anytime?

Solar spotlights offer a very user-friendly experience when it comes to their installation. Almost all products on our list have dual installation options. You can change their place of installation anytime.
